Cloud Factories investigates the growing entanglement of our professional and social lives with the ‘Cloud’ and the material, environmental and socio-political consequences of this relationship.
Alongside the publication of two zines (Tulip and They are growing like mushrooms), initial research findings were presented through an installation consisting of two oversized re-board panels and various add-ons. The piece highlights how the construction of data centres transforms seemingly ‘empty’ landscapes and the lives of human and more-than-human connected to these territories.
Short Circuit, 6–28 June 2026, Waag Futurelab
Add-ons depicting warning signs and photographs collected from data centre construction sites and already operational facilities in Spain and the Netherlands foreshadow the fate of the still unbuilt landscapes portrayed on the main panels.
The main panels bring together quotes from activists, researchers and designers interviewed for this project with visual evidence gathered through multiple field visits to prospective data centre sites in Spain and the Netherlands.
