Defending Your Inventory
Minted during Art Basel 2024, “Defending Your Inventory” embodies the absurdity of contemporary art markets. Through six fictitious bank notes, the project leverages the material expression of the art fair as a starting point to reveal its hidden links to pollution, tax evasion and other obscenities.
Paper money enjoys a conflicting and confusing reputation: It is both ephemeral and eternal, symbolically valuable and materially almost worthless, and timeless yet slowly dropping out of circulation.
By putting this medium in dialogue with expressions of art capital transfer and accumulation, “Defending Your Inventory” sheds light on the visible and invisible connections between Art Basel’s physical presence in the city and the transnational systems connected to it.
Special publication produced in the context of Basel Art Summer Camp 2024. Available for purchase in our online shop.
Colours: Mint and Gold; Paper: Clairefontaine Trophée Black 160 gm; Typefaces: Antarctica, Eurocat.
Printing: Risograph (self-printed). Kulturbüro, Basel; Editor: Livio Liechti; Design: Apsara Flury.
Limited edition of 40.
Special thanks to Monica Ray Scott and Florian Lauber for their vital support.
